Accessing most recent newsgroup listing

Hi - I'm a new user of newsgroups and I have a quick (and probably very dumb)
question.

I'm using WinVN as my newsreader and when I connect, it asks me if I'd like to
download the latest newsgroup list. When I click 'yes", the groups appear to
load very quickly, but when it gets to the 67750th group, the program hangs.
Every time. I've tried changing the configurations but nothing seems to work.
Has anyone else had this problem and, more to the point, does anyone know how
to solve it? I suspect, there's probably a simple solution but I can't seem
to figure it out.

Any help anyone can provide would be terrific.

Thanks!

Hi

I don't use WinVN but you might want to ask over at this group:
news.software.readers

There are people there that should be able to help. And please put
[WinVN] in the subject line so the WinVN users can find you easily.
:)

How do you know that 67750 isn't all the groups on the server?
Many large ones have less than that...

Go to the DOS prompt or Run command box and do:

telnet IP_of_Server 119

Then enter the following, waiting for the server to respond
after each:

user your_username

pass your_password

list

And save the output to a file.

Just curious, what does this reply have to do with the original

Then why even bother replying if my posts aren't worth reading?

nnq is special.

Be aware that outside nnq some really competent netizen filter
'X-No-Archive: yes'-posters. Same to nick-name-posters.

So special that somebody suggests downloading a newsgroup list using
telnet to a person who has a problem with their news reader hanging,
in a newsgroup for new users?

Competent Useneters don't post follow ups to articles they have
allegedly kill filed.

I had a similar problem with the 16 bit version of FreeAgent. It would
download 65,000 or so groups then crash.

It sounds line this is a memory management limitation, similar to the
filesize limit in older versions of notepad.

You could try either finding a server with fewer groups. Or trying other
software. Pan, 40tude Dialog, or xnews are all excellent choices.
